McArthur Burney Memorial State Falls

"Eighth Wonder of the World"

Burney Falls is not the highest or largest waterfall in California, but possibly the most beautiful. Park literature proudly proclaims that President Theodore Roosevelt once called Burney Falls the eighth wonder of the world. The park is quite beautiful, but it is the waterfalls that are the main attraction. We learned that one of the early Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies was filmed here ... as well as a Coors commercial ... boasting about their "pure Rocky Mountain spring water" ... uh-huh, right!

A short walk took us past a green wonderland of ferns and moss to the falls. Here Burney Creek along with additional water from underground springs plunge 129 feet over the moss covered walls into a small misty pool. It’s estimated that 100 million gallons of water flows over the falls every day. A small bridge took us to the other side for a different view and perspective of the falls. The roundtrip hike was just a couple of miles ... and was worth all of the wheezing and gasping the up and down trail demanded of us.

On our way to the trail we spotted this little guy having a snack . We thought he was really cute ... until we noticed those creepy looking feet.

Too often I would hear men boast of the miles covered that day, rarely of what they had seen.
