Springville: The Art City

Springville was a delightful surprise for us. The legacy of the artists who made Springville their home in the early 1900s continues to infuse all aspects of this small community. It is a city that genuinely takes art seriously. Close to 40 sculptures have been placed around the city, especially in the downtown area where the streets are also lined with art galleries.

The exterior design of the city’s Carnegie Library is the most unique that we have encountered. The unexpected use of a colorful tile design on the exterior walls, gives the building a southwest feel… reminiscent of an Indian pueblo.

The library now houses a Daughters of Utah Pioneer Museum that is literally stuffed floor to ceiling with a mind numbing collection of pictures, artifacts and memorabilia of local pioneers. A very talkative volunteer followed us around explaining each exhibit ad nauseam. What started out as an interesting and educational tour quickly became exasperating. We fled as quickly as good manners would allow, and to our surprise found solace on a bench with our old friend Mark Twain.
